Jean Richardson
Syd Entel Galleries is proud to present the work of Jean Richardson. Her glorious works
examine her long-standing romance with both equestrian imagery and with the expressive
figure of the ballerina. Mystery and myth echo through Richardson's etchings and
paintings, as veiled images float silently or thunder cross the surfaces of paper and canvas
with joyful abandon.

A native of Oklahoma, Richardson draws upon the wide-open spaces, light and color of the
American West as the inspiration for her monumental equestrian subjects. Her equestrian
art invokes a lost golden age a blend of North American Indian lore and the adventurous
fiction of the old Wild West when a drama of heroic proportions was enacted in an
unspoiled natural arena.

Her ballet images capture the delicate play of shimmering color, which echoes the
ballerinas' dance and celebrates it. Richardson's brilliant handling of painterly
semi-transparent layers of color and her richly textured surfaces, applied to the etching
by means of collography, are among the most distinctive qualities of her printmaking style.

"I started as an abstract painter and began to bring this hint of an image into abstraction.
And I think it leaves the viewer a lot more latitude. When it's all there every hair, every
nuance of conformation it's beautiful. But once you've seen that and enjoyed it, the
experience is over. With an abstract painting, where it's there and not yet not there and
you're not sure. it just lets you wonder and think and feel."
