DAVID GARCIA GLASS
Susan Benjamin Glass Etc. is proud to present the work of DAVID GARCIA
GLASS, INC.  David Garcia was born in San Francisco, CA in 1957 and now
works in Yacolt, WA.  From 1978 to 1980, Garcia became interested in
glass, both flat and hot, and studied stained glass with Paul Dufour.  After
studying with Leighton and Lipofsky Garcia in 1983 began working
independently out of Shaun Weisbach’s studio and founded and built his
own hot glass shop in 1987.  Today his work is collected and exhibited
throughout North America and Europe.

Licensed to practice landscape architecture and the son of an architect,
Garcia admits that his work is at times reminiscent of cityscapes through
his use of line and multi-layered geometric shapes.   He also imbues his
work with a sense of life and movement by mixing together brilliant colors,
random patterns, and changeable, evolving forms.  His philosophy is to
relate the ancient art of glass blowing to our contemporary world.  Garcia
creates his murrine glass vessels by layering molten colored glass on the
end of a punty.  Murrine glass vessels is ancient, dating back to the
Hellenistic Period (300 BC – 200 BC) it is the Italian word for the small glass
pieces or tiles that form the mosaic pattern.

COLLECTIONS:
Murrine: this series includes, vases and plates, which are done in the
techniques described above.  They resemble mosaics scattered on bold
backgrounds. The colored pieces of glass resemble jewelry spilled out on a
solid colored surface.
Bowls: this series includes oval shaped bowls colored in beautiful bold
colors with pedestals of gold and black.
Plates and Vases: the plates, bowls, and vases in this series have
multicolored designs, which on the plates disintegrate at the edges and on
the vases pull apart at the tops.  This type of design work shows movement.
